Who would benefit from taking Nebosh IFC qualification?
The International Fire Certificate has been designed for managers, supervisors, employee representatives and others to provide an appropriate breadth of underpinning knowledge for non-specialists in fire safety. The qualification will enable them to discharge more effectively their organisational duties or functions with respect to workplace fire safety.
What are the benefits of obtaining the International Fire Certificate?
The aim is to equip holders to contribute to the conduct and review of fire risk assessments and preventative and protective measures within most low risk workplaces, in accordance with International and European best practice conventions.
In the event of a workplace fire, in addition to the direct costs, employers can find themselves dealing with criminal prosecution, claims for compensation, adverse publicity and harm to both business reputation and profitability. Even a minor fire at a key production stage can mean very large losses for individual firms. Fire Protection Association statistics indicate that 77% of businesses experiencing a major fire never fully recover. Furthermore, fires causing the closure of premises could have a significant effect on staff. The vast majority of fire-related incidents can be avoided using sound health, safety and risk management.
Are there any entry requirements for the International Fire Certificate?
There are no specific barriers, in terms of academic qualifications, skills or experience to entry to the NEBOSH International Fire Certificate programme. However, it should be noted that currently the assessments are offered, and must be answered, in English only. The qualification includes a requirement to carry out an assessment based on the candidate’s own workplace and to produce a written report which must be in English. Candidates should discuss this with the accredited course provider before undertaking the qualification.
What level is the International Fire Certificate?
For users in Scotland, this qualification is intended to be accredited at Level 6 in the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF).Also available on a cost effective in-house basis. For users in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, this qualification is intended to be broadly comparable to a Vocationally-Related Qualification (VRQ) at Level 3 in the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) and the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF), comparable to GCE ‘A Level’ standard. What are common units and how do they apply to this qualification?
Common units are units which make up and can be used to pass more than one qualification. How long will I need to study to complete the qualification?
Full-time block release course would be expected to last for a minimum of 2 weeks (10 working days) and a part-time day release course would be spread over
At least 10 weeks. If you wish to study by open or distance learning, the tuition hours should be added to the recommended private study hours to give the minimum number of hours that this mode of study will require.
How is this qualification assessed?
The qualification is assessed by two written papers (see below) and a practical assessment which is carried out in the candidate’s own workplace.

What are the rules for registering and taking the three Units?
Units IGC1 and IFC1 can either be taken on the same day (usually the first examination in the morning and the second in the afternoon) or be taken on separate examination dates independently of each other. Unit FC2 must be linked to Unit IGC1 and/or IFC1 and must be taken within 10 working days (14 calendar days) either side of the written examination/s. The only exception to this rule is if you have previously passed both written units and have been referred in
Unit FC2; in this instance you will be able to register for and sit only Unit FC2 (as long as you are retaking the unit within 5 years of the first successfully declared unit).
Can I take only the fire units and still receive a qualification parchment?
As this qualification is unitised, you can choose to take just the two fire units. In this case you will receive a unit certificate for each successful unit (please see ‘What happens once I successfully complete a unit?’). However, you will not be eligible for an overall qualification parchment as all three units are required to complete the qualification. You may, though, be eligible for a unit exemption (please see ‘Can I claim exemption for any of the units from the International Fire Certificate’).
Duration: 10 days study + optional 2 day exam tutorial + exams.
