Prepare Your Study Environment – NEBOSH IGC

Comfort: Choosing to study in bed is probably a bad decision for most students. Most active students go at a pretty good pace all day and when given the chance to stretch out on a bed, will sooner or later drift off. Devote your bed to satisfying sleep. Find a place to study that is comfortable, but dedicated to study activity only. Usually good students find that a straight-back chair and desk give them a good support level and enough comfort to be able to concentrate and get some good study in for an acceptable period of time.

Distractions and Interruptions: Keeping distractions and interruptions down to a minimum has a lot to do with what kind of job you have done in giving your study periods the necessary priority and protecting that priority. If you have weighted your study time priority correctly, you will turn your cell phone off during your study time and let it take messages for you. You will find that you actually can live without it for an hour or two. A remote cubicle in the library is a good place to study if you find distractions are a problem for you. Winning this battle is one of the keys to developing effective study times and study habits.

Temperature: Being too hot or too cold is not conducive to good individual study or to good classroom attentiveness. If you know that you are going to be going from class room to library to class room to another study spot and such all day and it is a time of year when you can expect varying temperatures between outside and inside, you may want to consider clothing that is layered. A short-sleeved shirt or blouse with a sweater or sweatshirt over it and a light jacket stuck in your book bag can give you a way to adjust to varying temperatures and remain comfortable and attentive.

Studying at Home: If you are studying at home prepare your environment to minimize discomfort and distractions. Ideally, you have a desk that is sizeable enough and free of clutter to give you the room you need to study effectively with the appropriate materials. If you use a desk lamp it should be opposite your dominant hand so that you don’t have to contend with shadows as you write or take notes. Sometimes the dining room or kitchen table is the best place to get work done if you don’t have a good desk.
