The session was challenging as the scope was huge consisting of several topics varying across both management as well as technical topics. The following topics were delivered during the sessions:
- ERGONOMICS
- Planned Job Observation
- Defensive Driving
- Risk Assessment Assessor
- Critical Task Identification
- Accident Investigation
- Emergency Plan & Coordinator
- LOTO Training
- Permit to Work
It is a known fact that managers do 80% of their work in the office while sitting down, so this training was to give the managers awareness about ergonomics. We started the session by describing the principles of ergonomics and how to counter the most common ergonomic problems faced by workers. So knowing that a problem exists isn’t enough to counter it hence the next step was to know how to identify and assess the various ergonomic hazards in the workplace. The next step is to provide controls and assign workers responsibilities to identify and control the ergonomic problem. Then the formation and the working of the ergonomic committee were discussed.
To conclude the session we discussed the various controls and methods that could be implemented in order to rectify the various health effects caused because of ergonomic problems in the workplace. The various effects that vibration has on a worker and how it increases the chance of injury with respect to ergonomics been also discussed. After this was completed then we had a group discussion session where the workers were encouraged to identify the various hazards in their workplace and come up with control measures to counter.
Planned job observation is a method to ensure that the approved critical tasks are being followed step by step by workers according to the Job Safe Practices (JSP). We discussed the various responsibilities of the managers and the workers.
Methods to Ensure that the JSP’s are being followed, and that no critical steps are being left out and that no short cuts are taken, which can lead to accidents or injuries and the method to implement the same by conducting planned or unplanned supervision and observation for workers. Then the implementation of the PJO by providing training and re-training for the workers about providing updates and modification to the system. Towards the end of the session, we discussed the forms used and the methods to be implemented to carry out the task were also discussed.
It is a fact that Saudi has the largest number of crash accidents in the world, we have a session with the managers as well as the drivers in the company. So the basics of various SEC driving rules were discussed and then the importance of not driving under the influence was also discussed. The importance of not using mobile phones on trips was also discussed. The general principles were also discussed. Once the basics were clear we moved onto the 5 concepts of defensive driving. We then went out to practically check the concepts that we have discussed and did trial runs to get a better understanding.
Risk assessment is a vital part of the Safety and Health Management System and helps one determine the potential probability, frequency as well as the potential severity of loss of a hazard or near-miss incident. It helps to predict what could have happened under slightly different circumstances. The importance of risk assessment was discussed along with the responsibilities of the assessors. The process of the assessment was then discussed. Then the method to evaluate the risk was discussed and we did a small training exercise to get a better grasp of the concept.
The critical task is any normal work practices when done under certain conditions could cause serious consequences. Since working on a 10000kwphr power line qualifies as a critical task we had to highlight what the procedure was and the importance of the procedure. The session started with the purpose of critical task analysis and then the people who are responsible and accountable for the completion of the tasks.
One of the important topics needed to complete the analysis is JSP so we had detailed discussions on this and we had a practical session where we discussed a scenario and did the JSP for the same. After the completion of JSP, we discussed the planned job observation that is required to monitor the critical task analysis. We later discussed the various scenarios under which we could use them. Since it is a practical topic the candidates were very interactive as we related to real-life incidents.
One of the main responsibilities of a safety officer is to identify risk and prevent accidents from happening in the workplace. However, there is an even bigger responsibility which is to prevent the reoccurrence of an accident from happening in the workplace. We discussed the different types of incidents. Then the procedures and responsibilities of the respective people were discussed. We later went to discuss how to report an accident in the workplace and off the workplace.
No matter how good or efficient an organization’s Safety program, the possibility still exists for the company to have a natural or manmade emergency situation. It is through good planning and experience that the severity of the situation can be limited and the effects of the situation mitigated. We discussed the need for an emergency plan and how to implement and sustain one. The responsibilities of the workers and emergency coordinators were also discussed.
The last topic of the day was the 4 phases of the emergency management system. Once the training was completed we designed an emergency plan for a cylinder catching fire and during the process, the plan was drafted and responsibilities were given on how the situation has to be diffused. Workers showed immense interest in carrying out the assigned tasks and towards the end, workers were able to bridge the contents between theoretical and practical aspects of the training.
Lockout Tagout is a very essential system that could be used where we have any source of energy and we need to work on a live system. Since KEC constructs and maintains power transmission lines we had to stress the importance of using this method. The session started with the basic introduction of the topic and then we discussed the responsibilities of the various workers related to the task. Then the procedure on how to implement the LOTO was discussed. Finally, we discussed the precautions that we need to consider and the merits and demerits of using this method. To justify the idea we discussed a case study and 15mins group discussion was done on the incident.
One of the most commonly used methods in a workplace is the permit to work system. It is basically a part of the safe operating procedure. A permit is required if any task is considered as a risk. A few examples are, working at height, hot work, cold work, confined space entry, etc… just to name a few. After the introduction, we discussed the responsibilities of an issuer and a receiver in the workplace. Then we discussed the various stages of the permit. We then solved a scenario based on the company’s permit based on work activity in the workplace. The candidates had numerous doubts regarding the permit and it has fended with apt answers
