Health and safety statistics
The HSE has published the health and safety statistics for 2011/12 in Great Britain. They show slight falls in a number of key areas of workplace ill health and injury. Between April 2011 and March 2012:
- 173 workers were killed, down from 175 in the previous year
- 22,433 major injuries were reported, compared to 24,944 in 2010/11
- 88,731 ‘over three day’ injuries were reported, compared to 91,742 in 2010/11
- an estimated 1.1 million people said they were suffering from an illness caused or made worse by work, down from 1.2 million in the previous year.
The report from the HSE also includes the economic costs of injuries and ill health (excluding cancer), which were estimated to cost society £13.4 billion in 2010/11.
