Principles of fire and explosion, causes and prevention of different kinds of fire, fire protection in buildings and ensuring the safety of people in the event of fire. Crucially, the practical element of the course also ensures that participants can carry out, unaided, a fire risk assessment and prepare a recommendations report for the higher management.
No previous health and safety or fire safety knowledge is required although a written practical assessment is mandatory.
What are the benefits for employers?
A fire can have a devastating effect on an organization. 77% of businesses having experienced a major fire never fully recover. Employers and those in control of the premises should ensure that they assess fire risks and take steps to minimize those risks and safeguard people in the event of a fire. The NEBOSH International Fire Safety and Risk Management Certificate is designed to equip safety professionals to help their organisations meet these legal duties.
The modular qualification structure and variety of available course formats enables candidates and employers to arrange training around the needs of the business. Most NEBOSH training providers would offer in-house courses, to allow the inclusion of material specifically relevant to the organizations workplace.
Entry Requirements
The NEBOSH Certificate has no formal entry requirement. It should be noted that the examination is offered, and must be answered, in English, and that the course includes a requirement to write a short report (assessment), which must also be in English. NEBOSH recommends that candidates undertaking the NEBOSH International Certificate in Fire Safety and Risk Management should reach the equivalent of a scoring of 6.0 or higher under the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).
How is the course assessed?
The qualification is divided into three units, each of which is assessed separately:
- Management of International Health and Safety (IGC1)*
- International Fire Safety and Risk Management (IFC1)
- Practical Fire Risk Assessment (FC2)
Assessment method:
Unit IGC1: Management of International Health and Safety – 2 hour written examination
Unit IFC1: International fire safety and risk management – 2 hour written examination
Unit FC2:Fire safety practical application to be carried out at candidate’s own workplace
Examination: Rules & Regulations:
Units IGC1 and IFC1 can either be taken together on the same day (usually the first examination in the morning and the second in the afternoon) or be taken as separate examinations on independent dates. Unit FC2 must be linked to Unit IGC1 and/or IFC1 and must be taken within 10 working days (14 calendar days) on either side of the written examination/s.
The only exception to this rule is if you have previously passed both written units and have been referred in for Unit FC2; under which you will be able to register for and sit only Unit FC2 (as long as you are retaking the unit within 5 years of the first successfully declared unit).
FAQ: Can I take only the fire units and still receive a qualification parchment?
As this qualification is unitized, you can choose to take just the two fire units. In this case you will receive a unit certificate for each successful unit (please see ‘What happens once I successfully complete a unit?’). However, you will not be eligible for an overall qualification parchment as all three units are required to complete the qualification. You may, though, be eligible for a unit exemption (please see ‘Can I claim exemption for any of the units from the International Fire Certificate’).
Duration: 10 days study + optional 2 day exam tutorial + exams.
