It was a chilly morning about 14 degrees and clear skies. We have our work cut out for us as it was a Saturday and workers had to cut short their weekend. The company that I was visiting today was Hydratight Limited, they are a mechanical workshop based company. The deal with manufacturing and dealing with repairs of various mechanical components based on client requirements. I started the session by introducing myself and also getting everyone’s introduction about themselves. I then started the session by giving an introduction on First aid. We then discussed the purpose of first aid the along with the importance and the roles and responsibilities that people have towards first aid in the company. We then had a short break of 10 mins.

After the break we discussed the contents of the first aid kit and how to use each item in it. Next we discussed one of the most important topics in first aid, accident and incident reporting. We had a small exercise on a telephone conversation between an injured worker and the first aider. We discussed the details on what to ask during the call and how to provide the information in the right manner. We then discussed about the various dos and don’ts of a first aider once he arrives at the scene. After a series of queries regarding certain points we then discussed about CPR and how to perform them under various conditions.

We then discussed three case studies with respect to first aid and how a worker would respond to them. The first condition was about treatment for shock, the second case study was about embedded foreign objects and the last one was about asthma. Each of these concepts were explained using a video showing practical demonstration of how the first aid is to be done. We ended the session with a question and answer session. The class was very interactive and challenging as all the candidates attending the session were from different backgrounds like drivers, mechanics and sales representatives.
