Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) covers substances that are hazardous to health and they can take many forms. They include chemicals, fumes, dusts, nanotechnology, biological agents, mist and gases.

The training highlights on COSHH Essentials which sets out basic guidance on what to do to control exposure to hazardous substances in the workplace. It benefits participants to attain knowledge on THREE questions, what do you do that involves hazardous substances? How can these cause harm? How can you reduce the risk of harm occurring?

The session of 6 participants started with COSHH overview and brief discussion on that are hazardous to health; sources of hazardous substances in the workplace; COSHH risk assessment steps; sources of information for end users with detailed discussion on ‘workplace exposure limits’, the importance on keeping records of exposure & health surveillance. The participants were asked to prepare a risk assessment on their workplace with each of them choosing a specific activity to identify the hazardous substance and how these could cause harm with reference to duration of exposure, competence level & existing controls. The session concluded with a questionnaire on COSHH to measure the effectiveness of the session.
